We are ecstatic to unveil our latest collaboration with the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) – a culturally competent animated video series designed to educate youth on the importance of fire safety. 🚀The challenge was immense. How do we make the mundane both fantastic and educational? Our approach? A meticulous strategy and analysis phase, delving into FDNY's youth audiences through our audience and brand audit. We then ironed out the narrative arc with a storyboard workshop, ensuring our creative concept aligned seamlessly with FDNY's goals. The result? A captivating 13-minute video that doubles as a valuable tool for youth fire safety education. Watch the video today and stay tuned for more fire safety resources from our friends over at the FDNY
The Background:
The New York City Fire Department is the largest and most renowned fire department in the United States and is recognized as the world’s most adept response team. Their aim is to provide fire protection, emergency medical care, and overall public safety services to residents and visitors of all five boroughs. Each and every member is a sworn protector of life and property.
With over 150 years of standing in their community it seems only right that FDNY would be the one to turn to when it comes to educating students in local schools and young people in community centers about fire and life safety. The goal of this project is not only to provide the knowledge required to escape life-threatening fire situations, causes of fires, and the importance of early detection and quick response, but to establish FDNY as the leading authority on anything related to fire and life safety in the city of New York.
To develop, illustrate, and launch a culturally competent, engaging, and compelling animated video series reflective of New York City’s diverse communities and aimed at strengthening the Fire Department of New York’s efforts in improving youth fire safety awareness throughout the five-borough area. In addition to making the video culturally competent, we were tasked with updating the look and feel of FDNY’s iconic mascots: Hot Dog and Siren while also ensuring that the video could serve as a tool for youth fire safety education for years to come.
The Creative:
Our target audience for this video is young people in local schools, community centers, and general public between the ages of 5 through 9. We hope to leverage the fun and informative air of the FDNY Smart Podcast for kids into our video. We’ll take the established guides of the Podcast, Danny and Chloe as well as the FDNY mascots, Hot Dog and Siren, and transform them into charming and engaging illustrations that kids can enjoy.
We’ll took inspiration from The Magic School Bus to turn the Fire Zone rig into an extraordinary vehicle that takes our host, and the kids who are watching, on a journey they will never forget. We’ll take classic New York landmarks and brownstones and embody them into a world where kids can find the joy of learning about every day fire and life safety scenarios
The Creative Concept Write up:
Our concept will draw inspiration from classic kids shows like The Magic School Bus and Clifford the Big Red Dog, taking ordinary life scenarios and transforming them into something extraordinary and fun. Read more about this project by visiting the full case study!
